Risalah Alam & Ana

The Thirtieth Word, known as the Treatise on Ene and Zerre, is one of the most profound works in the Risale-i Nur Collection by Bediuzzaman Said Nursi. It addresses two deeply philosophical and spiritual mysteries: the secret of the human ego (ene) and the wisdom behind the continual motion of atoms (zerre). These two interwoven topics form the basis of the treatise, which explores how Divine Unity (tawhid) can be perceived through introspection into the self and observation of the physical world.

The treatise is divided into two primary parts, each explaining one of the “two great mysteries” alluded to in the Qur’anic verses quoted at the beginning.

In the First Part, Nursi unpacks the enigma of the human ego (ene)—a subtle, symbolic capacity placed within the human being not as an independent power, but as a key to understanding the Divine Names. Rather than being a source of arrogance or self-assertion, ene is shown to be a measuring tool (a vahid-i kıyasî)—a shadowy reference that allows humans to comprehend the otherwise boundless and infinite attributes of Allah. Just as darkness helps reveal the presence of light, the imagined ownership and knowledge in the ego help one grasp the true ownership and infinite knowledge of the Creator. However, when misused—through pride or self-worship—ene becomes a veil rather than a mirror. The treatise reveals how faith transforms the ego from a prison into a window to the Divine.

The Second Part deals with the mystery of the constant transformations of atoms (zerrat) in the universe. Nursi explains that the movement of atoms is not random or chaotic but operates under the precise command of an All-Wise Creator. The atoms, in their obedience, function like soldiers in a grand army or officials in a majestic kingdom. Every transformation they undergo is filled with purpose and meaning. By reflecting on their perfect order and continuous renewal, one witnesses clear signs of Allah’s will, knowledge, and power. Nursi ultimately concludes that atomic motion is one of the most magnificent manifestations of the Divine Name “al-Qayyum” (the Self-Subsisting), and a source of direct evidence for Allah’s oneness.

The Thirtieth Word complements the Twenty-Ninth Word, which solves one of the three great metaphysical enigmas of existence. Here, the second of those enigmas is resolved: how change and multiplicity can exist in a world created and governed by One Allah. The conclusion of the treatise highlights the seven great wisdoms and laws that govern the atom’s motion and how this reveals the manifestation of one of Allah’s greatest Names.

In sum, this Word transforms both the self and matter into signposts pointing to Allah. It teaches that when viewed with insight and faith, even the smallest particle—and the most inward sense—discloses infinite realities.
